ABOUT INDIRA KURUP
I was born at Kottarakara, Kerala as the fourth child among the nine children of Sri R. Parameswaran Pillai and Ms J. Kamalakshy Amma. My father was a school teacher with exceptional fervor and dedication to the job. Everybody honored and respected him as a great teacher and a man of immense ethical values. My father hailed from Nemom, near Trivandrum. My mother was originally from Poojappura, Trivandrum, later settled in Kottarakara. My mother’s father was in Judiciary job at Kottarakara. He was among the very few who had higher English education in Kottarakara. Due to the insistence of the locals, he had chosen Kottarakara for his residence. I was so lucky to have the most wonderful parents who molded me and other children.
After finishing my high school education, I did my undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the S.N. College, Quilon. My graduate education was at the University of Kerala, Trivandrum and I obtained a Masters degree in chemistry.
Before Joining as a Research Officer at the Government Analyst’s Laboratory at Trivandrum, I taught at St. Mary’s College in Trichur. I came to the United States in 1969 and conducted research in neurochemistry at the Ohio state University. While in Milwaukee I was involved in rheumatology research as a Research associate until retirement in 2007.
I have 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Two of my brothers and one sister passed away at an early age. Two brothers and a sister live in India while one brother and one sister live in the USA.
